I turned 60 last year, and my health was rapidly declining into the diabetes type-2, high blood pressure, arthritis abyss.

A couple of years ago, I was eating strictly by the book on Dr. Fuhrman’s Eat To Live plan, and I was enjoying tremendous health, energy, and clarity in my thoughts and work.  My doctor loved the results but expressed concern because I wasn’t following the traditional food pyramid of the published desirable American diet.  I succumbed reluctantly to his way of eating again, and after awhile, all the controls I had successfully built up through Eat To Live were destroyed, and I was slipped easily back into the normal American diet of high fat, high animal protein, and refined carbs.

Two years later, I had gained most of my weight back, and even worse, my numbers on bp, cholesterol/triglycerides, and blood sugar had severely declined to a point worse than they were before 2013.  My psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis were in full swing, and all my joints ached.

“Enough of this!” I thought, and I knew where I needed to go healthwise to get all of the health I can enjoy back. The plan works!  The numbers prove it!  But, even more importantly, it is a highly maintainable diet plan that has the backing of Dr. Fuhrman’s many years in nutritional research and family practice medicine.

I still like my regular doctor, but I probably won’t dangle the diet plan in front of him like it was the cure-all…even though it appears that it was, at least for the conditions I had experienced all these years.  His assessment of my diet was harsh, equating the word “protein” with “animal meat”, a common and unfortunate conclusion to make.  I should have expected it, never having known him to discuss nutrition with me in the 23 years I’ve been going to his office.  He is comfortable with the prescription med regimens, and that’s normal for most docs.  I love the guy; he bought me a cup of coffee at Borders one time and has always been friendly when we see each other in public, and that’s rare in suburbia where I live.  I guess he’s a bottom line guy numbers-wise, but he just doesn’t know how to get there without loading me up with unnecessary meds.

The blog is my way of keeping track, motivating myself, and keeping all my trial-and-error recipes.  “Breathing…at last” is still the perfect phrase to describe the nourishment and relief I have experienced through excellent nutrition.
